Plein Air Events for Artists of All Ages

Plein Air Events for Artists of All Ages
This May, Countryside Gallery & Yardley Art Center is sponsoring "Our Towns Through Artists' Eyes," a Plein Air Open celebrating the historic towns of Yardley and Newtown. Plein Air painting takes place outdoors in an attempt to capture the beauty with outdoor light. From May 14 through May 27 some 55 regional artists will be out and about our communities to "paint the towns!" We hope you will spot an artist at work during this time and take a moment to observe them at their craft.
The Plein Air Open will culminate in an exhibition, open to the public, May 29 - June 13 in AOY Art Center's Gallery. Visitors will have an opportunity to purchase these unique works for their home collection. The first prize is $500 and will be determined by nationally renowned plein air artist Joseph Gyurcsak!
Additionally, in collaboration with Countryside Gallery, the Newtown Mercantile Group, Experience Yardley, Commonplace Reader and the Friends of Washington Crossing, there is an art opportunity for young artists to participate in a Coloring Contest for artists in grades K-8 and a Quick Draw/Paint Session for artists in grades 9-12. Be A Part of a Bucks County Tradition!
THE BUCKS COUNTY PLEIN AIR TRADITION
Bucks County has a long tradition of plein air painting that began with the likes of William L. Lathrop who settled in New Hope in 1898 and started a summer art school. The area's rolling hills were spectacular, and the river, its tributaries, and the Delaware Canal were picturesque. The natural beauty attracted the artist Edward Redfield (1869-1965), who settled north of the town. Redfield painted nature in bold and vibrant colors, and was "the pioneer of the realistic painting of winter in America." His thick layering distinguished him from his contemporaries, and he amassed more honors and awards than any other artist in the New Hope Colony. His style is distinguished by its color, light, and usual time of day when painting. The third major artist to settle in the area was Daniel Garber (1880-1958), who came to New Hope in 1907... known for his "luminous, poetic renditions of the Delaware River."
